This is the flagship of the Santa Monica library. Unlike the others, it's open seven days a week! The underground parking lot is huge, and you pay for parking after you leave based on how long you've been parked -- no running out to plug more quarters in the meter. They have a small café offering sandwiches, soup, drinks, baked goods, and ice cream for sale, and a used bookstore (which operates on a volunteer basis, so unfortunately it isn't open all the same hours and days that the library is).
The children's area is a huge room tucked away in the back of the library, so you don't have to worry that your kid is breathing too loudly and bugging the other patrons. Along with all the books, tapes, and DVDs, there are about a dozen computers solely for children's use, study rooms (quiet little spaces with doors that shut, dry-erase boards, and a table and chairs), and always a few children's librarians happy to help you.
The Main Library hosts story times for babies up to 2 years old on Tuesday mornings -- check the site for exact times and dates. They also have a story series for two year olds on Thursday mornings, and a "preschool" story time on Thursday mornings for children from three to five years old. Again, check the site for details. They also have many story and craft events for older kids, and family movie days, musical and live theater events in their auditorium.
